How HEAL works?

I am very excited to tell everyone about a new website released by Alberta Health Services. www.ahs.ca/heal

This website was developed with emergency room physicians and clinicians to help parents better understand how to manage common childhood illnesses and issues.

I love the layout of this website especially how the most common childhood health concerns are listed on the right side and upon clicking, you can find out so much useful information about them. It lists which symptoms are particularly concerning and when medical advice should be sought.

  • Barky cough (croup)

  • Cough and wheeze

  • Common cold

  • Ear pain

  • Nosebleeds

  • Head injury

  • Vomiting and diarrhea

  • Fever

  • Febrile seizures

  • Rashes

There are two great videos on the website to help familiarize you to the emergency department. It is great to learn more about the hospital for general knowledge if in the future you need to go with your child there.

The first video is discusses which healthcare professionals you may encounter in your emergency room visit. There are so many people working at the hospital and may be overwhelming to try to figure out what everyone’s role is.

The second video gives you an orientation to the admission and assessment process in the emergency department. You can learn about how the waiting lists work and a tour of Alberta Children’s Hospital.

And under Quick Links there is a direct link to “Emergency Wait Times” at AHS Emergency Department if ever you need this information it is easy to find.

This is a great resource and I hope you take some time to visit it and use it when you need health information!
